Aesthetic – Usability Effects

While creating “Rethinking User Experience” brand “Aesthetic – Usability Effects” was at top of the mind. Which says:

A visually appealing design is perceived to be easier to use. A phenomenon where a good looking design is perceived as more usable than one that is less appealing, whether or not that is actually the case.

Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura, researchers at Hitachi in Tokyo, demonstrated the aesthetic-usability effect in their study. Their study measured the difference between the ‘inherent’ usability of a product and its ‘apparent’ usability by asking test participants to rate the beauty and usability of interfaces. It was shown that ‘the user may be strongly affected by the aesthetic aspect of the interface even when they try to evaluate the interface in its functional aspects’.

Hiring UX Designer

Building Design Team (UX) – hiring right brainers.

“When you are hiring people that are smarter than you are, you prove you are smarter than they are.”

In today’s competitive work environment, you need sharp minds around and need to be extra smart while hiring user experience professionals. So what to look for while hiring right brainers (User Experience Designers) one who is going to play a significant role in shaping design approach and help achieve business goals.

After interviewing more than 5K designers one thing is clear that every designer is unique in himself. So what works for me is to look for someone who is willing to change, adapt to the environment and follow what’s right. The reason for saying this is because it’s hard to find these brilliant minds with the right approach, moreover filtering from masses is even more challenging. It’s easy to mold growing and adaptive minds, and this has worked as of now. Experience has its advantages, let’s discuss those some other time…:-)

Knowing User, Delivering Business Goal: Defining Persona

For any business making a grave mistake of guessing the audience can lead to low sales, poor customer engagement and distancing business from users. So the question arises how do we understand the target audience and that’s where Persona comes into picture.

“Persona is concrete characterization of user profile.” It helps keep users at the heart of UX and UXD team focus on user experience and business goals.

What’s User Persona?
User persona is essentially a quick reference guide to an archetypal user’s habits and needs which is developed from research into users and their behavior. A fictional character (or characters) is created to outline a brief biography, behavioral patterns, goals and objectives on. This helps create empathy with the various stakeholders for the user and help guide the design process throughout. Practically a projects will create somewhere between 3 and 7 user personas. Fewer than 3 personas, and we may not be taking a wide enough view of our users, more than 7 and they become difficult to work with. The “Primary Persona” represents the main target audience and the others then become “Secondary Personas“.

Minimal Cognitive Load, Clean Design and Mobile

Every product should be simple and pleasurable to use but designing an effective, efficient, and enjoyable product is not achieved by simply having good intentions. There is a lot that goes behind the scene to create something that works and is useful.

USEFUL = UTILITY + USABILITY

Utility = whether it provides the features you need
Usability = how easy and pleasant these features are to use
